Services

We provide tailor made services and community engagement projects to build self-sufficient and sustainable communities. Read about some of our projects and services below:

Household Food Gardens

KCD drive an initiative to train and empower community members to establish nutritious household food gardens. We conduct comprehensive training with community members to impart knowledge related to preparing land for the garden, crop rotation, making seedlings, water harvesting and controlling pests. Community members are provided with all the tools and equipment that is needed and given practical demonstrations. Follow-up visits and conducted to offer support and guidance.

Skills Development

Our skills development initiatives are targeted at empowering community members and creating self-sustaining communities. Imparting vital skills to community members helps them to create an income that supports their families and work to develop their communities. Fewer services and resources need to be imported when community members have skills internally to perform work and generate their own resources. In addition, these skills and resources can be exported which brings more financial stability to both community members and the community as a whole.

Green Energy

Green energy is energy obtained through the natural resources that we have available such as sunlight, wind and water. Green energy is often obtained through renewable sources, making it more environmentally friendly, kinder to eco-systems and sustainable. Energy production is classified as green energy when the energy production process does not produce pollution. The three most common types of green energy include solar power, wind power and hydropower.

Entrepreneur Development

We strive to build sustainable communities with self-sufficient community members. This involves empowering community members to develop entrepreneurial skills. Successful vegetable gardens often produce more vegetables than what is needed by one household. This provides the opportunity for the surplus produce to be sold. We can assist people to develop business plans and implement strategies to establish successful businesses. The skills and knowledge gained through this training is transferrable and can be used by community members to establish a variety of businesses.

Water Harvesting

We are committed to encouraging people to use water sparingly. Water Harvesting involves diverse methods of collecting and managing water. The two methods we primarily focus on is greywater harvesting and rain water harvesting. Greywater is waste water collected from hand basins, washing machines, showers and baths (Greywater does not include water from toilet plumbing systems). Greywater can be collected and used to water gardens. Rain water can also be collected with catchment facilities and used to water gardens. Harvesting water assists in reducing water costs, recycling precious water, maintaining gardens and reduces the demand for water. We train people on how to collect, store and manage water effectively.

Vermicomposting

Vermicomposting is becoming increasingly popular for both industrial and domestic use. Vermicomposting, or worm composting, makes use of worms and organic waste such as fruit and vegetable peels to produce nutrient rich compost. Combining Vermicompost with your soil provides essential nutrients that promote plant growth and help to maintain healthy gardens. Vermicomposting has a multitude of benefits that make it an asset to any household: Vermicomposting makes use of the organic waste from your kitchen, this makes it cost effective and also reduces household organic waste. It is a chemical-free process which means that it is more environmentally friendly than chemical fertilisers. Vermicompost contains microbes that creating living soil for plants when added to gardens. A vermicomposting system can be relatively small. Therefore, it requires only a small space and can fit into most houses, apartments or even schools.
